Pamćenje reči - glavni problem u učenju engleskog

Pamćenje reči na stranom jeziku svima predstavlja problem. Neki se u tome bolje snalaze, a neki lošije. Iskustva početnika u učenju jezika često opisuju da je to "mukotrpan proces". Zbog toga se vraćam na razgovor sa autorom Language Bridge metoda, ovog puta na temu učenja reči:

Marina Petrović :  Shall we discuss the main "obstacle of memorizing English words", which was listed as the major problem according to the survey below  ?

Arkady Zilberman: I think that conventional methods of learning foreign language are responsible for the greatest misconception that language learners all over the world unfortunately follow: they think that English speech is formed by taking separate words and sticking them together.

One fact: presently, there are 14 million registered college students on campuses throughout China. Every single one of these students will have to pass the CET exam (College English Test) in order to earn their degree. All free time students spend on memorizing English grammar rules (they do it in Chinese!) and the 4,500 English vocabulary words needed to pass the test. Native English speakers use about 3000 words in normal conversations! So why couldn’t Chinese students speak in English when they knew 4,500 words?

They don’t speak because 4500 English words are memorized as translation from Mandarin. This knowledge is helpful in reading English but useless in speaking since speech process in native language is automatically performed by using word chunks and phrases.  In fact any spoken language has the same mechanism. Our goal is to achieve real fluency when the words come out of your mouth fast and you understand instantly without subconscious translation to the mother tongue.

A few recommendations:

Stop studying separate words in English. Don’t use flashcards. Learning anything (words or even phrases) against its translation is creating extra steps in your brain. It’s making you slow. It makes you think slowly, hear slowly, speak slowly. But the problem is that learning incorrectly is creating a maze that your brain has to run through as it processes every word. You don’t do that to yourself in your native language, so why are you doing that with a foreign language?

And the other bad side-effect of learning from flashcards is that they encourage you to believe in one-to-one translation. They make you narrow-minded and unaware of the language you think you’re learning. When you learn an English word together with a translation into your native language, and burn them together in your mind as a pair, you create the illusion of a world where every language is exactly the same, just with different words. But that world doesn’t actually exist.

Learn words in phrases in interesting contexts using your emotions and feeling and preferred senses. Phrases are GROUPS of words that naturally go together. Learning with phrases is 4-5 times faster than studying individual words. 4-5 times faster! Also, students who learn phrases have much better grammar. The only way to ever actually learn is by using the language.

Language Bridge (LB) software which is offered for the last week for free (from September 15, 2011 it price will be $149) offer exactly this natural English language environment that allows to practice language using emotional and easy to mentally visualize texts. Most importantly – you will do it without the usual burden of subconscious translation into the native language.

The three-action activity, which is the main tool of the LB software, namely, reading, listening and speaking simultaneously with the speaker – imposes a significant load on the brain and automatically eliminates cross-translation, i.e. association of new English words with the words in the mother tongue.

Učite reči u frazama u interesantnom kontekstu, koristeći emocije i osećanja i čula.
